The Full Picture, Clearly Told

Comprehensive, structured, and authoritative clarity.

"Black holes changed the meaning of thermodynamics. In classical general relativity, the total area of event horizons tends to increase under ordinary conditions. Jacob Bekenstein proposed that this area could represent entropy, a measure of hidden microscopic information. Stephen Hawking then showed that quantum fields near a horizon give a black hole a temperature and allow it to radiate.

The puzzle is that Hawking radiation appears thermal, carrying a limited description of the object that produced it. Quantum mechanics normally preserves information about a physical system as it evolves. If a black hole disappears into purely thermal radiation, information about everything that fell in seems to be lost. General relativity and quantum theory then offer answers that do not fit together cleanly."
